Qualche sorpresa quest'anno gli Emmy Awards l'hanno riservata. I premi della televisione statunitense solitamente non sono certo noti per sconvolgere le previsioni della vigilia. Anzi, l'Academy tende a fare scelte molto conservative, una volta stabilito che una serie è di suo gradimento (vedi la vittoria di Elizabeth Debicki come Diana, ultimo fuoco d'artificio di una lunghissima scia di vittorie della miniserie The Crown). 

Dato il commiato dell'anno scorso a Succession - una serie che per anni ha monopolizzato le categorie interpretative e tecniche in comparto drammatico -  quest'anno c'è stato più spazio per le serie appena arrivate. Come da previsioni a essere incoronata come miglior serie dell'anno è Shgun, il dramma fanta-storico giapponese di FX (da noi su Disney+). Vincono anche i due protagonisti Anna Sawai (che interpreta Mariko) e Hiroyuki Sanada, il primo interprete giapponese a strappare questo premio.

Per l'emittente FX è un trionfo che sa di consacrazione tra le grandi: l'altro suo titolo, The Bear (come sempre inspiegabilmente presentato come commedia) conquista una marea di statuette per le interpretazioni: Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach e Liza Colón-Zayas vincono tutti una statuetta. Solo Ayo Edebiri non ce la fa, battuta da Jean Smart per il suo ruolo in Hacks.

La comedy HBO Hacks è la vera sorpresa della serata: strappa infatti la statuetta come miglior commedia proprio al favoritissimo The Bear. 

Nel comparto delle miniserie, come da previsioni, Baby Reindeer non fa prigionieri: vince come miglior miniserie del'anno, miglior attore protagonista e miglior attrice non protagonista. Non può nulla solo contro Jodie Foster, che vince come miglior attrice protagonista di una miniserie per il suo ruolo in True Detective: Night Country.
